The Historic Landmarks Commission was established in 1986 with the City's adoption of a Historic Preservation Program. In April of 2006, City Council merged the duties of the Design Review Board with those of the Commission, forming the Historic Landmarks & Design Review Commission.
The Commission is made up of City residents who volunteer their time and professional expertise to review, designate, and encourage the preservation of historic resources, as well as providing review of certain development applications for conformatce with the design review guidelines.

| The Commission routinely meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, Salem Civic Center. These meetings are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. |
