ESTABLISHING ORDINANCE: SRC Chapter 17 TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Mayoral Appointment
NUMBER OF MEMBERS : Eight to Fifteen TERM LENGTH: Two years

The Salem Youth Advisory Commission acts as an advisory commission to the City Council regarding youth issues. Meetings are generally held on the first and third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Special membership requirements: Consists of not fewer than 8 and not more than 15 voting members, at least 70% of which are members under the age of 22 at the time of their appointment. The under-21 members are appointed by the Mayor from Salem-Keizer School District high schools and local colleges for a term of two years. The Mayor is a non-voting, ex-officio member of the commission. The 21 and older members include one management representative from Salem-Keizer School District, one from the Salem Police Department, and other representatives from organizations or systems that address local youth issues. These appointments are for a term of one year. Representatives from educational alternatives and youth organizations are also sought.
